A Little Boy

April 15, 2013

I see him. I know exactly what he looks like. That little boy waiting for his mom or dad or aunt or uncle to cross the marathon finish line. His eyes are wide as he scans the crowd to wait for his loved one. I imagine him wearing a Boston Red Sox baseball cap, his hands in his jean pocket, and looking up and down and leaning forward to catch a glimpse of all of the runners. I see her. [...]

On Trying New Things

April 12, 2013

It is no secret. I love routine. My morning run, coffee, and writing time are staples of my day. If for some reason I miss out on these daily rituals, I feel incomplete. This is my quiet time, something I crave more and more as I get older. As much as solitude provides comfort, I also realize that it is essential to move out of my own box and try new things. The idea of trying new things appeals to [...]

Pay Attention To The Poetry Of The Earth

April 10, 2013

“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” Thoreau, Walden   I am not a photographer. I realize too late, after the moment passes, that it was an opportunity to snap a picture. Yesterday I yearned for some inspiration. I decided to take a walk and pay attention to the earth. It is easy to slip into the doldrums of a “busy” life [...]

On Rejection

April 8, 2013

“There are still many more days of failure ahead, whole seasons of failure, things will go terribly wrong, you will have huge disappointments, but you have to prepare for that, you have to expect it and be resolute and follow your own path.”  Anton Chehkov This past week I learned an essay I submitted for publication failed to garner any positive attention. I received a brief, but gracious email stating my submission failed to meet their criteria. The one word [...]

On What We Contribute: Words From Roger Ebert

April 5, 2013

I remember watching Siskel & Ebert in my childhood living room. After a long session of studying, I turned on the television on late Sunday nights and caught their movie reviews. After learning about Mr. Ebert’s passing, I felt a sadness for a person I never met. I suspect it is because yet another staple of my past is gone. We are all victims of time’s clenched fist. The continuum of goodbyes always unsettles me. It magnifies how painfully I [...]

Holding On

April 3, 2013

Last week my daughter and I spent Spring Break together. We hung out at home and in around places that were nearby.  Before her break started, she devised a list of activities she wanted to do during the week. On Sunday night, the day before her break officially commenced, we watched a movie at home. We slid Judy Moody and the Bummer Summer into the DVD player. She grabbed popcorn from the bowl, popping each piece in her mouth, while [...]

On Unscripted Joy

April 1, 2013

Let a joy keep you. Reach out your hands and take it when it runs by. Carl Sandburg Spring sprints through the desert. Just as you sink into the perfect temperatures and admire the flowers that bloom out of the cacti, summer announces its entrance. To capture spring’s essence, you must act fast. Yesterday I felt an urgency to celebrate spring in a unique way. Part of my need stemmed from my desire to participate in an abridged festival [...]

On Staying Home & Solitude

March 29, 2013

“Wherever I am, the world comes after me. It offers me its busyness. It does not believe that I do not want it. Now I understand why the old poets of China went so far and high into the mountains, then crept into the pale mist.” Mary Oliver I like quiet. When I feel lost, I retreat home. Sitting in my office, the familiar seeps into my veins. The sound of my fingers moving on the keys of my laptop, [...]

A Festival Of Colors

March 27, 2013

A splash of colored powdered sand leaks out from the plastic bag. The blue, green, yellow, and pink color spill over. These vibrant speckles are waiting for a place to land, on someone’s face, hand, or on a white kurta worn by a young girl. Today, in small villages and large cities in India, people are racing toward one another, laughing and twirling, drenched in color. The Hindu festival of Holi, a welcome of spring, glimmers and flashes, carrying a [...]

On Walking & Noticing

March 25, 2013

Last week, in the evening, I decided to take a walk in my neighborhood.  My exercise of choice is usually a run, but on this particular day I ventured on a walk. Spring is abundant everywhere. I noticed the yellow flowers bloomed full in the Palo Verde tree. It is also the one time of year that pink buds blossom from the cacti, the contrast not lost on me, that even amongst thorns, beauty emanates. Sand dusts the sidewalks, birds are [...]
